CONCRETELY :

  • Do you know of any other famous towers that have collapsed?

the Tower of Babel, the twin towers of the World Trade Center

FOR FURTHER :

  • Before the story of the Tower of Babel, the Bible says that all men spoke the same language. What are the advantages of this? What are the disadvantages ?

The Bible tells that all the men had gathered and had the idea to build a tower so big that it would touch the sky. But God did not like this idea at all and found that men were far too proud to want to enter the heavens. So he multiplied the languages on Earth so that men could no longer understand each other. With the men unable to communicate with each other, there was a lot of confusion and they failed to complete their turn. The project was abandoned and the men dispersed on Earth.

#power

The tower is a symbol of community life. He has always been ambivalent:

  • Symbol of protection: There is the tower that allows you to watch and watch for the arrival of the enemy or the savior from afar. It also makes it possible to alert dispersed people to a danger or a happy event. It allows them to be brought together. When it indicates the time, it gives rhythm to common life. Thus, the tower can be a symbol of protection, vigilance, gathering, unity and union.

A bell tower, a minaret, a guard tower, a watchtower, a building on top of a hill, ...

  • Symbol of power: There is also the tower which symbolizes greatness, power. From there there is only one step for it to symbolize pride and human excess when:
  1. A human community wants to display and impose its power, its power on a rival community.
  2. Symbolically, man wants to collectively reach the heavens and become like a god by his own forces, by his own power. That is to say, collectively he believes he can do anything.
  • Everything can collapse: The fragility of the towers (leaning, unfinished or destroyed) then recalls the human vanity that believes itself to be all-powerful.

The game "the tower of Pisa" makes it possible to realize that any collective work must keep a sense of proportion. The tower, by dint of being high, always ends up falling.

Good advice: Don't carry out a project just for the glory you can get from it!
