Goal:

Raise students' awareness of the need to organize the workplace (spatially and functionally) to improve efficiency.

Steps

We need an orderly workplace to be efficient

Few explanations about the necessity of being organized (team, space, …) to be productive.

Print the documents :

Prepare the material for each team

Use the PPT attached to present your workshop

-       You are the employees of LAPIS® (Large Agency for Pencil International Spreading). This company produces pencils.

-       LAPIS has 2 factories, in China and in the Philippines. The stakeholders of LAPIS® want to close one of the two branches, because of the economical crisis. They will only keep the most efficient & profitable factory.

-       Divide students in 2 factories (team China & team Philippines)

1. In each factory, you will have 6 workshops to complete the process

  • Cutting-sharpening : 5 pers
  • Box manufacturing : 5 pers
  • Packaging : 4 pers
  • Quality control : 3 pers
  • Warehouse : 1 pers
  • Logistic : 3 pers

 

2. Steps to play :

  • Step 1 (15mn) : prepare the workspace and read specific guidelines (for each workshop in the factory)
  • Step 2 (20mn) : 1st production (cf PPT)
  • Step 3 (20mn) : performance assessment for the 1st production
  • Step 4 (20mn) : implementation of 5S actions to improve the productivity /quality / reduce waste
  • Step 7 (20mn) : 2nd production (le nombre de personnes par workshop devient libre)
  • Step 8 (20mn) : performance assessment for the 2nd production

PRINCIPLES of 5S Management

 

“5S” is a methodology for organizing your workplace in a clean, efficient and safe manner to enhance your productivity.

 

Sort :

  • The logistics frequently disposes the broken tools and the unused materials from the tables.

 

Set in order :

  • Create specific zones for each material or tool with scotchtape or color paper
  • Create boxes for storage of materials
  • Redesign the tables layout for higher efficiency…

 

Shine :

  • Put garbage bags or bins near every table
  • Someone is in charge of the cleanliness of the factory

 

Standardize :

  • Display the guidelines & the specifications in visible places
  • Put marking on the tables to identify the delivering areas / storage areas for finished products

 

Sustain :

  • Do a briefing with the whole team before start of production in order to clarify the process
  • Use a specific signal to call the logistics when something is needed
  • Someone is in charge of reporting to everyone the advancement of the work (#boxes already produced…)
  • Change the workforce assignement
