Goal:

Understand the difference between objectivity and subjectivity

Steps

Imagine a story from a sheet of paper that represents a city scene. Only the speaker or educator can see this medium. You can choose a different type of landscape depending on your taste or context.

  1. The announcer describes the scene to the young people with soft background music. They are instructed to imagine every detail of the scene with their eyes closed.
  2. The young people are given papers and pencils to draw the scene they have seen individually. The objective is to have them draw the scene differently based on their understanding, experiences, and emotions.
  3. During the debriefing, the announcer and the audience will discuss the different representations of the stage, including the introduction of the concepts of objectivity/subjectivity.

CONCRETELY

Does it look like the original?

What did you learn from this activity?

Is there anything you've taken more care of?

How can you make the drawings more faithful to the original?

Can you give examples of information that was given but was distorted by the person who gave it?

TO GO FURTHER

Philosophy question: is truth subjective, i.e. relative to the subject, or does it exist outside the subject? Truth = adherence of our intelligence to reality, not the opposite (ideology: the intelligence decides what reality should be). Possible to give examples of ideologies (no individual reflection, common thought, diktat).

#subjectivity

Why did you do this activity?

  • To learn to live better with others, to communicate better
  • To understand reality and the distortion of reality

To make the drawing resemble the original, the speaker should provide a high-level overview. This will assist the draftsmen in starting their drawing with the correct proportions, without over-interpreting any elements.

For example: starting to draw a huge elephant when it is only taking up a small part of the image

In everyday life, we may receive information about an argument between two friends, but we may not have all the details. It's important to gather as much information as possible to understand the situation and get the big picture, without giving too much importance to minor details.

It is impossible to be completely objective because we never have all the information related to an event. When we communicate, we always distort reality a little, whether we tell it or draw it.

What does this tell us?   There is no such thing as a false drawing. There is no single truth. Each one brings their subjective truth that they feel and understand.

Objectivity refers to reality as it exists outside of oneself, while subjectivity is related to the individual's perspective and experiences.

It is important to note that subjectivity involves a filtered representation of reality, influenced by factors such as personality and personal history. --> Same in religion and everyday life: my point of view is subjective. This can lead to conflicts at home, difficulties understanding a class, or challenges appreciating a meal.

The best advice is to remember that reality is often better than ideas.
