Steps

  • Print PPT images in large format (if you don't have a projector available)
  • Practice the exercise of associating emotion with each image, especially for paintings and sculptures
  • Read the comments for the last slides, to get another point of view on the emotions related to the paintings and sculptures
  • Review the vocabulary of emotions in the language you will be using for the activity

Face Quiz (accessible to all ages)

·       One by one, present the images to the youth. Ask them what emotion they perceive from the photograph

·       Don't answer "yes" or "no", let them express themselves without giving your opinion. This is how all the photographs are passed

·       Write down all the vocabulary proposed by the young people (all the emotions named)

·       Conclude by saying that everyone can read emotions on faces in different ways. This depends on their culture and experience. Emotions are a means of communication but are sometimes misunderstood. It is always necessary to talk to each other to understand each other well.

Abstract art (for high school or college students)

·       Present the first proposed image. Alternatively, you can choose another image from the culture of the country where you are conducting the activity.

·       In the same way, as in Part 1, let the young people express themselves without giving their opinion.

·       Emphasize that everyone may have a different perception

·       When everyone has had a chance to give their opinion, give your own. Otherwise, use the one proposed by the comment on the slide concerned.

·       Do this for several paintings, sculptures, music, ...

·       Conclude

Entering abstraction isn't easy in Asia. This is because many Asian languages lack sufficient words and nuances. The idea is not to do an in-depth artistic analysis. Instead, it's to help young people see that each person interprets a situation according to their experience and culture. This doesn't always correspond to what their neighbor thinks. That's what communication is all about.

  • Every work of art always evokes emotions for the one who takes the time to stop and appreciate it.
  • Art is a powerful tool for getting messages across. Artists can use their technique to propose a message, to influence opinion, beyond the scope of creativity
