What we like:

  • Implementation of strategies
  • Very quick to install
  • Full of suspense
  • Possibility to play in teams
  • Students observe each other to understand

Steps

Two people face to face in front of 21 pencils flat on the table, aligned against each other.

  • The players are placed on both sides of the aligned pencils. They are entitled to take between 1 and 3 pencils at the end of the battery, each their turn, each on their side of the battery.

They cannot pass their turn.

  • The number of pencils therefore decreases as the towers go, because the "selected" pencils are put aside.
  • The game continues until the last pencil is taken by a player.

The one who takes the last pencil lost!

CONCRETELY :

  • From how many remaining pencils on the table are you sure you can win?
  • What was your main motivation to play: winning, playing, understanding the technique/mathematical formula?

FOR FURTHER :

  • We don't all react the same way in the same way. What are my reactions to the unexpected?
  • Have you ever experienced new situations in which you did not react in the same way as your neighbor, friend?
  • When you are confronted with an obstacle, an unexpected in your life, your work, how do you react?

#the other

In the game of the 21 pencils, there is no unexpected, no authorized cheat. If you leave 5 pencils in front of you, you are sure you can win. The following player will take 1, 2 or 3, then you can conclude by leaving him only the last. The mathematical formula can be put in place much further upstream.

  • Different temperaments: the practice of game highlights two temperament differences in the first place:
  • The one for whom the important thing is to play and have a good time and who does not care to know if there is something
  • Whoever feels immediately, sometimes even before starting to play, just looking at the pencils, that there is something, and who wants to understand.
  • This game illustrates many situations of everyday life. Faced with a given situation, an event, everyone will react according to what they are, their experiences, what they have received.

For example in front of someone who has problems, some will just want to avoid hearing about it, others will listen to him, others will want to give advice, others will want to solve the problems in his place

  • Consider the opinion of the other: this game is very interesting to understand that others do not necessarily function like me, and that their priorities are not the same as mine.

Good advice: Put yourself in place of the other
