Étapes

In order to help young people really think about the qualities, without always repeating what the neighbor wrote, it is useful to introduce them to some of these qualities. Two attached examples may be useful to you. :

  • a list of adjectives
  • the 24 character strengths

Relaxation - Sponsees sitting in a circle - Breathing exercise with eyes closed (inhale through the nose, hold for 2 seconds and exhale to the end) then imagining their favorite color (inhale/the color enters the body through the nose, and spreads in the limbs at the time of expiration). Do about twenty breaths.

  1. Write the qualities of each
  2. Distribute a sheet and a marker per person
  3. Everyone writes their first name in fairly large letters on their sheet.
  4. Still sitting in a circle, pass your sheet to the neighbor on the left. Everyone writes a quality or a little message on the sheet they have just received, depending on what they know about their neighbour.
  5. When everyone has finished we pass again to the left, etc., etc., until the sheet returns to its recipient.

Gather all its qualities in silence. (see attached file, sample sheet)

If parents participate, they can also read aloud the qualities they recognize in their child.

FOR THE YOUNGEST:

  • Have you discovered qualities that you did not know you had?
  • By giving qualities to others, has it allowed you to highlight your own?

FOR THE OLDEST:

  • Is it easy to get to know each other?
  • In what situations do we need to be able to say who we are?

# self-awareness

Text from Aristotle:

  • Getting to know each other is very difficult [...] and a great pleasure at the same time (what a pleasure to know each other!); but we cannot contemplate ourselves starting from ourselves: what proves it are the reproaches that we address to others, without realizing that we are committing the same errors, blinded as we are, for many of us, by the indulgence and passion that prevent us from judging correctly.
  • Therefore, the way we look in a mirror when we want to see our face, when we want to get to know ourselves, it is by turning our gaze towards our friend that we could discover ourselves, since a friend is another oneself.
  • Let us conclude: self-knowledge is a pleasure that is not possible without the presence of someone else who is our friend; the self-sufficient man would therefore need friendship to learn to know himself.
  • ARISTOTLE, The Great Morality, II, 15

Good advice: Knowing how to welcome what people think of me

The activity is completely flexible. Parents can be present and write 3 or more qualities that they recognize in their child and/or in another godchild of the program; they can do the same activity as their children but between parents only; and the godchildren can also write the qualities of their parents...

  • It is fundamental for a child to know the good that his parents think of him and the talents that recognize him. For parents, doing the exercise of thinking about their child's talents, and then sharing with them, what a remarkable way to help them grow.
